1st Weekend of Samu
We just finished the first Summer Weekend of Samu. Many measurements were taken, two or three precarious loads of heavy materials were transported, and several pounds of concrete poured to level the floor. It’s going to be a lot of work. The place still looks raw.
Zen dog Becky was on the site Friday afternoon and she came home smelling like dirty, old newspaper—a scent anyone under 30 probably wouldn’t even recognize. Decades of printing certainly left its mark on the space, even scent imprints. Those will go away as we cover the floors, the walls, and completely change the space, but there will always be something special about sitting on a foundation of information and humanity. While news has moved in the direction of speed and novelty, this old news printing room is going to be a place of stillness and ordinariness. That feels like a good antidote for hurried, anxious times.
