BORN IN A PRISON | Karma, Self, & Liberation

What is karma? How does it shape the lives we live and the selves we create? And most importantly, how can we break free from its constraints? In this four-week series, Born in a Prison: Karma, Self, and Liberation, Sensei Michael Brunner will guide participants through an exploration of the profound relationship between karma, the ego, and liberation.

Karma is more than just a spiritual concept—it is an intricate web of actions and consequences that influences every aspect of our existence. This series begins by tracing the origins of karma and how it moves and traps us within cycles of cause and effect. We will investigate how these karmic forces give rise to the self, a construct that is continually reinforced by unconscious patterns and psychological defenses.

To deepen our understanding, we will draw on insights from Anna Freud’s work on the ego’s defense mechanisms, exploring how the self protects its identity and reinforces the very patterns that keep us bound. With these insights, participants will reflect on the ways their own defenses—such as repression, denial, and rationalization—perpetuate karmic cycles.

The series will culminate with an exploration of liberation. Moving beyond the confines of karma and the ego involves recognizing and dismantling these patterns, opening the way to clarity, freedom, and a more authentic existence. Through a combination of Zen teachings, Western Philosophy, and contemplative exercises, Sensei Michael will offer practical tools for living beyond the self and embracing a life of liberation.
