UJI Part Eight | I, Uji
“In short, everything whatsoever that exists in the whole universe is a series of instances of time. Since everything is for the time being, we too are for the time being.”
In this section of Uji, Dōgen profoundly reminds us that not only is everything in the universe uji, but we, too, are uji. This realization brings a deeply personal dimension to the teaching of Uji: just as everything else is transient and ever-changing, so are we.
Understanding that we, too, are uji means recognizing that every moment of our lives is a complete manifestation of being-time. This insight challenges us to see ourselves not as separate or permanent entities but as integral parts of the continuous flow of existence. We do not simply exist within these moments; these moments are our very being.
This perspective can be both humbling and liberating. It reminds us of the fifth of the Five Remembrances: "I must be parted from all that is dear and beloved to me." This remembrance emphasizes the impermanence of our relationships and attachments. By acknowledging that we and everything we love are temporary, we can develop a deeper appreciation for the present moment and the people in our lives.
Living uji is not a passive acceptance of our transient nature but an active embrace. It means fully showing up each moment, letting go of our attachments to the past and future, and recognizing that our true existence is here now. This awareness is a key that unlocks a door to a life of greater authenticity, presence, and compassion, transforming the way we experience and relate to the world.
When we awaken to ourselves as uji, we begin to see that our struggles, joys, and experiences are all temporary yet profoundly significant. This understanding can transform how we relate to ourselves and others. It encourages us to cherish our experiences and relationships, knowing they are fleeting and precious.
Moreover, this realization helps us navigate the challenges and losses we face. Understanding that everything, including ourselves, is uji allows us to approach life with a sense of equanimity and acceptance. We learn to appreciate the beauty of each moment, knowing that it is part of the ever-changing tapestry of existence.
Living uji, we cultivate a deeper sense of connection and empathy. Recognizing our shared being-time with all beings fosters an understanding of oneness and compassion. This awareness can inspire us to be more kind, patient, and understanding, enlightened to our relationships and our lives.
As we reflect on this teaching, let us embrace the fact that we are uji. Let us live each moment with mindfulness and presence, appreciating the transient beauty of our existence. This is the heart of our practice and the essence of Dōgen's teaching. By doing so, we honor the profound truth of our being-time and awaken to the timeless wisdom of Uji.
