Transforming the Heart & Mind | Seven-Day Meditation Retreat

October 3rd-9th, 2025 | One River Zen Center, Ottawa, IL

As autumn deepens and the air turns crisp, we gather to turn inward—toward the quiet that has always been here, just beneath the noise of our lives.

This seven-day retreat marks the beginning of our Ango, or "peaceful dwelling" period—an ancient Zen tradition of intensified practice during the change of seasons. For centuries, practitioners have entered this sacred time to deepen their commitment, clarify intention, and return wholeheartedly to the path.

We’ll settle into the steady rhythm of traditional Zen training:
• Seated and walking meditation
• Shared work practice
• Morning service and evening chanting
• Daily Dharma teachings and reflection

There is nothing to fix, and nowhere else to be. Just the invitation to meet each moment fully—with humility, presence, and care.

This is not a retreat of escape, but of return.
A return to simplicity. A return to sincerity. A return to what we already are.

Held in silence and shared effort, this retreat is open to all.
No prior experience necessary—just a willingness to come home to your life.

Embark on a journey of inner radiance and self-discovery as you engage in silent meditation sessions, contemplative evenings by the bonfire, restorative yoga, and insightful Dharma talks. Find solace in the serene beauty of our surroundings and reconnect with your inner self.

They include men and women of various ages, some wearing traditional monk robes and aprons, and others dressed in casual or business attire. The background shows windows and house siding, with trees and natural light.
A cozy living room during Christmas with six people gathered, a decorated Christmas tree in the corner, a small artificial Christmas tree on the fireplace mantle, and sunlight streaming through a bay window. The people are chatting and relaxing.

From mats and cushions to cozy accommodations, we've got it covered, allowing you to focus solely on being present and embracing this transformative experience. Let the worries fade away as you indulge in a nurturing retreat. Beginners are perfectly welcome. Just bring yourself!

We practice in community, living dormitory-style in our beautiful meditation center, a Queen Anne Victorian built in 1890, situated on the scenic banks of the Illinois River.

Participants can immerse themselves in nature - taking a walk along the river front or even take a short ride to Starved Rock State Park.
